Bring Home the Holidays: Making a Difference for Pets in DFW
This December, Dallas Animal Services (DAS) extends a warm invitation to the community to help bring pets home for the holidays. With a surge in activity and a heartfelt spirit of giving, DAS is focusing on adoption and foster initiatives during one of the shelter’s busiest times of the year. The statistics reflect the meaningful impact of community support: in October, DAS achieved 1,377 positive outcomes, and in November, that number climbed to 1,378. December aims for a goal of 1,400, with 588 successes already recorded.
“Every adoption opens a kennel for another pet in need,” shared Victoria Chittam Bennett, Assistant Director of DAS. “The holidays are especially meaningful when we can make new companions part of our families.” Notably, for every pet adopted, another one gets a chance at life.
Festive Events Highlighting the Season of Giving
This year, DAS has joined with the Friends of Dallas Animal Services (FODAS) for their 12 Days of Holiday Giveaways. This initiative, supported by generous donations from the community, allows adopters to win holiday-themed prizes. From toys to grooming packages, each giveaway enhances the excitement of adopting a fur friend. You can find more information about FODAS and their initiatives on their website, friendsofdas.org.
Along with adoptions, DAS encourages participating in their Silent Night Holiday Staycations, a short-term foster opportunity running from December 20-21 for selecting a dog. This program allows dogs a break from the shelter environment, giving them a chance to unwind and show off their true personalities in a home atmosphere. “The insight we gain from these short foster stays is invaluable for helping pets find permanent homes,” explained Amanda Earl, Assistant Director.
Community Engagement: A Call to Action
The core of this initiative lies in community involvement. Whether you are ready to adopt a new family member or if you wish to foster, your support can have a life-saving impact. DAS Director, Paul Ramon, emphasized the collective responsibility we hold: “Together, we can bring home the holidays for the pets relying on us.” In addition to adopting and fostering, DAS also calls upon residents to volunteer their time or share information on social media about adoptable pets, which can lead to further placements.
The importance of fostering cannot be overstated. Not only does it relieve overcrowding in shelters, but it also provides a necessary break for pets who may become anxious or stressed in a shelter environment. Plus, fostering allows individuals and families to indulge in the joy of companionship without the long-term commitment, making it a rewarding experience.
Embrace the Spirit of the Holidays: Adopt, Foster, Volunteer
This holiday season is not just about giving; it's about spreading love and joy to those who need it most—our pets. The dashing dogs and curious cats awaiting adoption represent more than just pets; they symbolize hope for a loving family and the possibility of a brighter future. If you're interested in adopting or fostering, visit the DAS shelter located at 1818 N. Westmoreland Rd., or check out their website at bedallas90.org for a list of adoptable pets and further program information.
As holiday festivities unfold, remember that the greatest gift often comes in the form of a wagging tail or a soft purr. Whether it's through adoption, fostering, or volunteering, the love and commitment of the Dallas-Fort Worth community toward these animals can create lasting changes in their lives.
Your Next Steps This Season
As we navigate through this festive season, consider how you can contribute to the animals relying on us. Whether opening your home to a furry friend or volunteering your time, you can make a significant difference. With strong community efforts, it's possible to turn the holiday season into a time of joy and compassion for pets in need. Together, let’s bring home the holidays and ensure none of our animal friends are left behind this season.
